TooThought!

TooThought! is the program I have developed starting from 1997 using VisualAge for C++. Running on Win32 platform, it plays quite well. Setup program has been built using Inno Tool, one of the best freeware setup tools.

About TooThought!

TooThought! uses an iterative deepening alpha-beta search, with null window. Transposition table is used to maintain results from a depth to the next (also known as MTD algorithm, described in the Aske Plaat's home page). TooThought! also uses techniques to speed-up the search, like Enhanced Transposition Cutoff (ETC), Probabilistic Pruning (an adapted version of the ProbCut algorithm by Michael Buro) and moves ordering based on shallow searches and transposition table information. The evaluation function, which is totally customizable by the user, is by default based on discs patterns, mobility and, in the endgame, on parity. This factors are linear combined and the parameters are estimated using a gradient descend method.

In the opening phase of the game, TooThought! use an opening book derived from the analysis of a set of games played on IOS among the most famous players (human and computer). Each game is then analyzed to find out possible variations and to compute, for each opening sequence, an expected game value. Such values are then used to choose the best move in responding to the opponent's one.

The endgame engine, using a modified version of Multi-Probcut algorithm by Michael Buro, is able to solve the game, in a standard 25 minutes game, at 24-22 empties, using Win-Lose-Draw values, and at 22-20 empties computing the exact discs difference. Anyway, because the time required to solve a game depends also on the actual discs configuration, is possible that the time within the move had to be done will be sufficient to solve the game with a greater number of empties or, in the worst cases, that the time to move doesn't allow to solve the the game and, hence, TooThought! has to move with an approximated choice.

Download TooThought!

The current version is 3.3. With respect to version 3.0, what is changed is described here.

Starting with 3.0 version, TooThought! uses the Microsoft Speech SDK 5.1, to add "talk" and "voice recognition" capabilities to the program. To use these features, You have to install the Microsoft Speech and Voice Recognition redistributable files, that can be downloaded here (or from the list below) and installed through Microsoft Installer. To be noted that those files, once installed, can be used at operating system level, and are not specific to TooThought!, so they can be used with others voice-enabled programs as well.

Notes about the program

Despite the fact that you can install and play TooThought! with easiness, is better to know some peculiar aspects of the program:

TooThought! games

Trying to test the real TooThought! strength, I have arranged some games against various well known computer programs. The following table summarize such games but, obviously, has not the intend to establish a real Othello programs rankings, for which a much higher number of games are requested. The version used for TooThought! is 1.6 with fixpack 8.

Each game, played chosing similar strength level for both players, has been played running both programs over the same machine, a Pentium III Mobile 750 with 256 Mb of Ram running Windows 2000 Professional. When available, "think in opponent time" option has been disabled to allow a program to use full CPU power.

Opening book, if available, is used with no randomness. For each game, the winner is highlighted with gold color and for draw games the green color is used.
