Othello analysis

Using available games archives, and also including games played on VOG (up to May, 2000), I have made the following analysis:

Opening lines

Using the openings listed by Robert Gatliff the analysis has been performed with respect the total number of games in each archive and then, for each opening, observing its trend across years. In the spreadsheet the term "Ratio1" refers to the ratio between the times the opening line has been played and the total played opening lines of the same length; the term "Ratio 2" refers to the ratio between the times the opening line has been played and the number of played games

Opening lines

The analysis is extended to includes all openings lines but is computed only for the totals and not for each single year and the openings listed are those that has been played at least 1% of the total

First strike

The analysis has been performed over the statistical distribution of the move number at which some particular positions are occupied for the first time (for example, the average move number at which a disc is put over a corner square)

Mobility

The analysis point out the "mobility" distribution from different points of view: over all game moves; from the black player point of view, when black wins and when lose; and from the white player point of view whith the same subdivision of the black one

Game result

The analysis is about "game result" and uses two descriptors, the first is the absolute value of the difference between 32 and black final discs number (range is [0,32]); the second is the game result from black point of view (range is [0,64])

Discs reversed

The analysis is about "discs reversed" distribution from different points of view: the first is over all game moves; the second is from the winner point of view; the third form the loser point of view

Discs difference

The analysis is about "discs difference" distribution from different points of view: the first is the absolute value of the discs difference over all game moves; the second is the discs difference from the point of view of the winner

Energy

The energy is defined as the average game epoch at which a given board position is taken by a disc. The energy is highest for the position taken at last game move and lowest for that taken at first move. To eliminated simmetry influence, each game has been normalized so that the first move is in F5, this implies that the energy for this position is always equal to 1

For IOS games the analysis has been performed over three different set of games: all games played; games played between players with a rating greater than 2000 point; games played between "computer" players.

Last, I have rated all players using both the VOG Rating System and the GGS Rating System. This has been done applying rate formulas in a chronological order over the games contained in the archives. Only players with more than 20 games for IOS and THOR and 40 for VOG are listed. You can find results downloading this zip file containing an Excel 97 spreadsheet.

Note: all analysis are available as "zipped" Excel 97 spreadsheets.
